- IMRAN KHAN second day in CHINA -

IMRAN KHAN is on visit to CHINA. He is joining hands with various officials of CHINA.

On the second day of the PTI delegation's China visit, a visit to Chairman Mao's mausoleum was arranged. The delegation also met with officials specifically dealing with poverty alleviation, population control and discipline (anti corruption measures).

Imran Khan and his team were briefed by the State Council Leading Group Office of Poverty Alleviation on how China managed to raise about 400 m people out of poverty. They were informed that while the high growth rate over the last 30 years laid a good foundation, it was just one of the reasons enabling China to alleviate poverty. Other reasons included reform of the economic system.

Imran Khan sought details of China's rural and urban poverty alleviation programmes. Later in the day, there was a briefing on how China manages population control.

The final meeting was with the Central Discipline Commission of the CPC which deals with inspection of Party officials and the government officials. PTI had especially sought out this meeting to learn how China deals with political and bureaucratic corruption. The meeting from the Chinese side was presided over by Mr Yao Zhengke, Vice Minister Supervision Ministry dealing with Discipline and Inspection. Anti corruption is the main function. But supervision also focuses on projects and development so it can be done more scientifically.

Imran explained the PTI's long term commitment to anti corruption and justice. Imran explained how corruption used to hinder Pakistan's development but now it threatened the existence of the state itself.

The meeting was followed by PTI Chairman Imran Khan's lengthy interaction with the Chinese media. An interesting side effect of Imran's presence in Beijing was his recognition by foreign visitors to the city from cricketing nations who kept taking pictures with him.

The visit of the PTI delegation, which included Dr Shireen Mazari, Vice President Foreign Affairs, concluded with a dinner in its honour by the Pakistani ambassador to China Masood Khan where the embassy officials, their families and other Pakistanis in Beijing were present - all eager to see icon Imran Khan. The ambassador graciously hosted around a hundred people on this occasion.

Hopy Imran Khan's visit of China will make both countries closer to each other and will be helpful for the peace in South Asia.

- Islamic Method of Slaughtering -

Research: Islamic Slaughtering and Western method of Slaughtering.
Let's begin with a small introduction with the term HALAAL

What is Halaal ?

Halal is an Arabic word meaning lawful or permitted. The opposite of halal is HARAAM (ﻡﺍﺮﺣ ), which means unlawful or prohibited. Halal and haram are universal terms that apply to allfacets of life. However, we will use these terms only in relation to food products, meat products, cosmetics, personal care products, pharmaceuticals, food ingredients, and food contact materials.

While many things are clearly halal or haram, there are some things which are not clear. Further information is needed to categorize them as halal or haram. Such items are often referred to asmashbooh, which means doubtful or questionable.

All foods are considered halal except the following (which are haram):
Swine/Pork and its by-products - Read more on WHY PORK IS PROHIBITED
Animals improperly slaughtered or dead before slaughtering
Alcoholic drinks and intoxicants Carnivorous animals, birds of prey and certain other animals Foods contaminated with any of the above products,

Foods containing ingredients such as gelatin, enzymes, emulsifiers, and flavors are questionable (mashbooh), because the origin of the seingredients is not known.

Let's now move into the topic.

The Islamic practice of slaughtering animals by means of a sharp cut to the front of the neck has frequently come under attack by some animal rights activists as being a form of animal cruelty, the claim being that it is a painful in human method of killing animals. In the West, it is required by law to stun the animals with a shot to the head before the slaughter, supposedly to render the animal unconscious and to prevent it from reviving before it is killed so as not to slow down the movement of the processing line. It is also used toprevent the animal from feeling pain before it dies.

German Research Studies Pain,

It therefore may come as a surprise to those who have made such acclimations to learn of the results of a study carried out by Professor Wilhelm Schulzeand his colleague Dr. Hazim at the School of Veterinary Medicine, Hannover University in Germany. The study: ‘Attempts to Objectify Pain and Consciousness in Conventional (captive boltpistol stunning) and Ritual (halal, knife) Methods of Slaughtering Sheep and Calves’ concludes that Islamic slaughtering is the most humane method of slaughter and that captive bolt stunning, practiced in the West, causes severe pain to the animal.

In the study, several electrodes were surgicallyimplanted at various points of the skull of allanimals, touching the surface of the brain. Theanimals were allowed to recover for several weeks. Some animals were then slaughtered by making a swift, deep incision with a sharp knife on the neck cutting the jugular veins and thecarotid arteries as well as the trachea andesophagus (Islamic method). Other animals werestunned using a Captive Bolt Pistol (CBP). During the experiment, an electroencephal ograph (EEG) and anelectrocardiogram (ECG) recorded the condition of the brain and the heart of all animals during the course of slaughter and stunning.

The results were as follows:

I – Islamic Method When you slaughter in Islamic way the blood is drained from the flesh, where as other method ofkilling clots the blood and 45 percent of the blood remains in the flesh, hence eating such meat is highly dagerous to health, especially kids.

2. The first three seconds from the time of Islamic slaughter as recorded on the EEG did not show any change from the graph before slaughter, thus indicating that the animal did not feel any painduring or immediately after the incision.

3. For the following 3 seconds, the EEG recorded acondition of deep sleep - unconsciousness. This is due to the large quantity of blood gushing out from the body.

4. After the above-mentioned 6 seconds, the EEG recorded zero level, showing no feeling of pain atall.

5. As the brain message (EEG) dropped to zero level, the heart was still pounding and the body convulsing vigorously (A reflex action of the spinal cord) driving a maximum amount of blood from the body thus resulting in hygienic meat for the consumer.

- POLITICAL PARTIES GEARING FOR ELECTIONS -

Reconciliation of the political parties to the fact that the constitution is going to be amended and elections would be held in October 2002 has been the major event last week (22-28 July 2002). The parties’ decision to contest in the elections, despite rejecting the proposals, should be welcomed.

The parties are aware that boycotting the elections would only allow the less popular pro-military groups to win the elections and form the government. It is essential to keep these opportunist parties away from the Parliament as they have a key role to play in the military regime’s agenda. First, a government with only pro-regime parties contesting and winning would create a myth among the international community (read the US) that the democratic process has been restored. An elected Parliament, however sham it may be, is a face-saver for the US to continue its support to General Musharraf without any self-proclaimed and selective moral dilemma. Second, a government run by pro-regime parties would continue to serve the regime’s interest inside the Parliament and ensure all the regime’s actions are democratically sanctioned. Given these factors, it is essential that the main political parties do not boycott the forthcoming elections. The amendments to the Constitution and the military can be better fought being part of the government rather than outside it. Precisely for these reasons, the political parties have decided to go along with the proposals for changes.

One of the key changes is making intra-party elections mandatory. The PPP has already announced that intra-party elections would be held at- all levels before August 5. The party is also planning to conduct an election for the post of its Chairperson for the first time ever since it’s formation in 1967; it is sure to elect Benazir Bhutto as its Chairperson. Besides, efforts are on to unite all factions of PPP including PPP (SB) led by its chairperson Ghinwa Bhutto.

The PML (N) is also preparing for elections, but unlike the PPP, there is no serious move to unite all the factions. The PML (QA), led by Mian Azhar, is likely to be the most favored party of the military regime and the other factions are composed mainly of a few leaders without any followers. The PML (N) may replace Nawaz Sharif with Shabaz Sharif as its leader with some understanding worked out between the party and the military.

The MQM would be conducting intra-party elections by the end of this month and be contesting the elections. No doubt, the party would be able to win its traditional seats in Sindh without any hurdle.

The religious parties, under the banner of Muttahida Majlis-e-Amal (MMA), have already announced that they would take part in the elections. In the absence of PPP and PML (N) leaders, these parties are optimistic. They are aiming to procure more than five percent of the votes - a minimum eligibility requirement for contesting for Senate elections. These parties have already announced their understanding with all major political parties (except MQM) for contesting at local level (and not at Provincial or national level).

It appears that all the mainstream parties including the PPP, PML (N) and MQM that are a part of the Alliance for Restoration of Democracy (ARD) would not be contesting under a single banner, but rather independently with an informal and unofficial understanding on seat sharing. It is essential under the Political Parties Order 2002 that even an alliance holds internal elections like that of a party. Besides, given the differences among the various leaders and among the followers at the grassroots level, it is better for the parties to contest with an informal understanding rather than a formal alliance.

Another decision made by the parties is not to challenge the packages in court as they have realized that approaching the judiciary is pointless given recent judgments in favor of the military regime; thus far, the judiciary has not given a single verdict against the military regime in any case of significance. The parties feel it is better to appeal in the “peoples’ court.”

On the positive side, towards conducting free and fair elections, Justice (retd) Irshad Hasan Khan, Chief Election Commissioner of Pakistan, has made two significant announcements. First, the ban on transfer of the civil servants till the end of elections and the second, an invitation to a Commonwealth delegation to observe the election process. He has also asked the regime to lift the ban on political activities. These steps, no doubt, would increase the credibility of the election process and the Election Commission itself.

All major political parties are set to contest in the forthcoming elections, much against the wishes of the military regime; any understanding formal or informal among these parties would certainly affect the prospects of the pro-regime parties. That why the military regime, well aware of this predicament, has strengthened its position vis the Parliament by arming the President with more powers and introducing a National Security Council.

Hope Their geering will make good changes in Pakistan. This will emerge democracy and will be better for Pakistan INSHALLAH.
